Three days after, I’m still a bit high off Jesse Boykins III‘s performance at Cargo for Writer’s Block‘s second anniversary celebration.
But the whole night was amazing and I need to give props to Writer’s Block for inviting so many extremely talented people to perform. It was the first time for me and it will definitely not be the last!
First, The Illersapiens enchanted me with their beautiful mixture of rapping and singing, very energetic and well-written music. I had never heard of them but I will definitely check them out now!
Then, one of my favourite spoken word artists, Inua Ellams, performed two of his poems and I was in heaven. If you’ve never heard of him, you can check out my review of his play here. The only thing that annoyed me was that he may not have received all the attention he deserved. Apart from that I really enjoyed seeing him deliver these beautiful words and images, which transported me into his universe. I really look forward to seeing him perform again!
After him came another spoken word artist who just blew my mind! Deanna Rodger is a very impressive poet, she performed four of her creationss, including two conscious ones and two about love, as she said, and everytime she demonstrated her amazing writing skills as well as a breathtaking flow. I will definitely check her out!
It was then time for Poeticat, who took me aback a little bit at first but who are actually very talented and took me in their quite special universe for the time of the performance. They mix poetry and music and the result works really well, especially the blending of their voices.
After a little intermission it was Kersha Bailey‘s turn to shine! Once again, I am a bit ashamed to say I had never heard of her before. But she definitely convinced me of her talent straight away! Her voice is simply enchanting, and the lyrics of her songs are heatfelt and easy to relate to. The musicians did a great job too, as well as the two backing vocalists. I truly enjoyed her show and wanted more! I will definitely look out for more music and performances from her.
Last but definitely not least, Jesse Boykins III came to the stage… It was the first time he was performing in London and he sure did blow my mind! I knew it would be great, I was really looking forward to it, but what I didn’t know is that I would still feel that great three days after! His performance was simply spotless and his interaction with the (ovewhelmingly female) audience made it even more enjoyable. It was great to see how he enjoyed it himself, to feel the positive vibrations and love floating everywhere. The show was a bit short to my taste but it was enough to recognise his amazing talent and how wonderful an artist and performer he is. I am very happy I made it there and once again, big thank you to Writer’s Block for making such a beautiful night possible!
For those of you who didn’t make it, here is an extract of Jesse Boykins III’s rendition of Outkast’s Prototype. Simply amazing!
And here is his performance of Itis, off his second album The Beauty Created. Enjoy!
